LITTLE WOMEN BY LOUISA MAY ALCOTT

Image
Little Women What I like about the story "Little Woman" by Louisa May Alcott is how determined the girls are to get what they deserve in life. But before they had a good life, since they were little, they experienced challenges and struggles in life. The March girls experienced love, being hurt, and losing the person they loved. Through those experiences, they became strong and continued to achieve what they wanted in life. -Magpantay, Florence Joy

LIFE OF PI BY YANN MARTEL

Image
Life of Pi      Life of Pi is one of those books that has stuck with me long after I put it down. Yann Martel's novel explores spirituality, survival, and the power of storytelling through the eyes of a young Indian boy named Pi Patel. The story is a tapestry of vivid imagery and philosophical musings that take the reader on an emotional journey that is both harrowing and heartwarming.      At the beginning of the book, we meet the protagonist as a middle-aged man who has just moved to Canada. He is searching for a new beginning and is trying to come to terms with his past. He tells his story to a Canadian author in an attempt to convince him to write a book about his extraordinary life. The story he tells is one of survival at sea.As a young boy, Pi is fascinated by religion and spirituality. He practices Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam simultaneously, much to the dismay of his parents. When his family decides to move to Canada, they set off on a cargo s...

THE WATER DANCER BY TA-NEHISI COATES

Image
The Water Dancer        In Ta-Nehisi Coates' novel The Water Dancer, however, the Task has a much darker meaning. The Task is the name the narrator, Hiram, gives to slavery - and he refers to himself and his fellow slaves as the Tasked. The masters he refers to, somewhat mockingly, as the Quality.      The Water Dancer follows Hiram on his path from slavery to freedom via the Underground, putting a new face on the underground railroad. As a slave, Hiram shines a different light on the world of Virginia's tobacco plantations, and on those who drive them while desperately longing for escape. You may think of slavery as the one human being owning another - an evil situation, but simple to understand. In The Water Dancer, narrator Hiram Walker explores the nature of slavery from the inside. For Hiram and other Tasked people, slavery is a lack. A lack of control, a lack of hope, a lack of stability, and a lack of simple everyday comforts enjoyed by the Qualit...

GONE WITH THE WIND BY MARGARETTE MITCHELL

Image
Gone with the Wind       I had the great opportunity to watch Gone With the Wind and I can say that the theater was nearly full, and I thought that it was interesting that a seventy-year-old film would have this much power over audiences who would never had seen it when it debuted.      However, as I watched it, the audience reaction had me wondering about how the film is seen by today's viewer, especially one who hasn't come across it.       Ultimately, Gone With the Wind will have a hold on audiences until the last copy disappears from history, and even then, the memory will still possess the imagination of romantics long after we've all passed from the scene. It is a Great Film, made with great care by craftsmen in front and behind the camera. Thus, it will be enjoyed by generations of film lovers. -Maravilla, Marlyn Shane G.

HARRY POTTER BY J.K. ROWLING

Image
Harry Potter      What I loved the most about the theme of education in the series is how it gives Harry's life meaning. Hogwarts is Harry's home - his friends are like his family, his professors are like family as well, and he is truly himself when he is at school. Similarly, school for me is like a home away from home - I feel so joyful when I am around knowledge and am seeking knowledge all the time under the guidance of incredible mentors. It is very empowering to feel like there are infinite things you can learn and new discoveries that await you if you persevere with passion and hard work. I wouldn't be surprised if J.K. Rowling also felt that her PhD days were some of her fondest memories.      All in all, the Harry Potter series is chock-full of educational themes - the message that education is a right for everyone, that great mentorship produces great students, that the choices we make and what rules we choose to follow or ignore come with consequ...
